Spider Control in Dallas, TX
Almost every spider in a Dallas house is useful and no threat to you. Two are worth identifying properly — and the best way to reduce all of them is to reduce what they eat.

Most Dallas spiders are not the problem
It is worth saying plainly, because a lot of marketing in this niche depends on you not knowing it: the overwhelming most of spiders in a Dallas home pose no threat to people, and they eat the insects you actually do not want. A cellar spider in a garage corner or an orb weaver across a porch light is doing free pest control. Removing every spider from a property is neither achievable nor desirable.
Two species in Texas are medically significant, and knowing how to recognise them — and where they actually live — is more useful than a blanket treatment.
Brown recluse
Light to medium brown, with legs that look long relative to a fairly small body, and uniformly coloured legs without banding. The often-cited violin marking on the back is real but hard to read without practice and gets over-diagnosed constantly. The more reliable identifier is the eyes: six, arranged in three pairs, rather than the eight most spiders have — which requires a close look at a captured specimen. They are reclusive by nature and prefer undisturbed places: storage boxes, wardrobes, behind furniture, in garages, in attics, in stacks of stored clothing.
Black widow
Glossy black with a red hourglass on the underside of the abdomen. Far easier to identify with confidence. They build irregular, notably strong webs in dark sheltered spots — under garden furniture, in meter boxes, in wood stacks, under deck framing, in the corners of a garage or a shed.
If you think you have been bitten
Spider bites are much rarer than internet self-diagnosis suggests, and many wounds attributed to spiders turn out to be something else entirely, including bacterial infections that need quite different treatment. If you have a spreading, worsening or severely painful lesion, or you feel systemically unwell, seek medical care promptly. If you safely can, keep the spider for identification. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
What actually reduces spiders
Spiders follow their food. A property with a lot of spiders generally has a lot of insects, and reducing the insects does more than anything applied directly to the spiders.
- Deal with the lighting. Bright white exterior lights pull in flying insects all night, and the spiders arrive to eat them. Warm-toned or motion-activated fixtures, or moving the light away from the door, changes the whole picture.
- Knock down webs regularly. A broom around eaves, porch corners and window frames, repeatedly. Persistent removal makes a location unattractive far more effectively than a single treatment.
- Clear harbourage. Stacked wood, cardboard, unused pots and clutter against the house wall are exactly what recluse spiders want. Store boxes off the floor and sealed.
- Seal the gaps. Door sweeps, window screens and sealing around utility penetrations keep both the spiders and the insects they follow outside.
- Shake out what has been stored. Boots, gloves and clothing that have sat in a garage or attic through a Dallas summer deserve a shake before they go on. This is the single most practical recluse precaution there is.
When treatment makes sense
A perimeter and interior programme is reasonable where there is a confirmed medically significant population — multiple recluse specimens found indoors, widows around areas children use — or where a household includes someone unable to tolerate them. A good operator will inspect, identify what is present, treat harbourage areas and entry routes, and be straightforward with you that a spider-free house is not the goal and is not on offer. Anyone selling that is selling a story.

Spider questions from Dallas homeowners
How do I tell a brown recluse from an ordinary brown spider?
Most brown spiders in a Dallas house are not recluses. The violin marking is difficult to read and is the most over-called identification in the field. Two better checks on a captured specimen: recluses have six eyes in three pairs rather than eight, and their legs are a uniform colour with no banding or spines. If it matters, keep the specimen and have it identified rather than relying on a photograph.
Are spiders worse in Dallas at certain times of year?
Sightings rise in late summer and autumn, partly because spiders that hatched in spring have reached noticeable size and partly because cooling weather brings some species toward buildings. Indoor recluse sightings often increase when a garage or storage area gets disturbed after a long undisturbed period — which is why an autumn clear-out turns them up.
Will a treatment get rid of every spider?
No, and you would not want it to. Spiders are ongoing arrivals from the surrounding environment and they eat other pests. What a sensible programme does is reduce the population in the areas you use, target harbourage where medically significant species are found, and cut the insect food supply that attracts them. Anyone offering a spider-free property is overselling.
Do those ultrasonic plug-in repellers work?
Independent testing has not supported the marketing claims made for ultrasonic pest repellers, and the US Federal Trade Commission has previously taken action against manufacturers over unsubstantiated claims for such devices. Physical exclusion, lighting changes and web removal all outperform them, and cost less.
I found a web with an egg sac. What now?
Remove and dispose of it if you can reach it safely — a single sac can hold a substantial number of spiderlings. If it is a black widow web in a location you regularly use, or you are not confident of the identification, that is a reasonable reason to have someone treat the area properly rather than reach into it.
Is it true you swallow spiders in your sleep?
No. It is a durable piece of internet folklore with no basis. Spiders have no interest in a breathing, vibrating human face and actively avoid it. Worth knowing before it costs you a night's sleep.
Found something you want identified?
Keep the specimen if you safely can. Identification is the part that decides whether treatment is warranted at all. Calls may be recorded for quality and training.
