When Termites Swarm in North Texas
Winged insects at a window in spring are the clearest termite signal you will ever get. Here is how to read it, and what to do before you clean it up.

What a swarm actually is
A subterranean termite colony spends almost all of its life out of sight, in soil and inside wood. Once it reaches maturity — a process measured in years rather than months — it starts producing a reproductive caste called alates: winged termites whose job is to leave, pair up and found new colonies elsewhere.
A swarm is that departure. It is brief, it is triggered by weather, and it is the only time most people ever see the insect that has been living in their house. That is what makes it valuable information: the swarm is not the problem, it is the announcement of a problem that has been running quietly for some time.
Why the timing works the way it does
Swarming is cued by temperature and moisture. Colonies swarm when conditions favour the survival of the alates that leave — warm air, high humidity, and damp ground for the pairs that land. In practice, in North Texas, that means the warming stretch from late winter through spring, with individual swarms concentrated on mild afternoons following rain.
Which is why a specific date is the wrong thing to look for. A mild February brings swarms forward; a cold, dry spring pushes them back and compresses them. What stays reliable is the pattern: warm, humid, shortly after rain, usually the middle of the day.
Termite swarmers or flying ants?
This is the identification that matters, and it is easy once you know where to look. Both swarm in spring, so seeing winged insects does not settle anything by itself.

The discarded wings are often the most useful evidence of all. A scatter of small, equal-length wings on a windowsill, in a bath, around a light fitting or along a skirting board is close to diagnostic, and it often outlasts the insects themselves.
Where they emerged tells you where to look
The location of the swarm narrows the search much, so note it before cleaning up.
- Indoors, at a window or light. Alates emerged inside the structure and flew toward light. This points at a colony in or beneath the building.
- From a crack in a slab, an expansion joint or a bath trap. Direct evidence of a route from soil into the building.
- Around a porch pier, a deck post or a fence line outside. Colony in the soil nearby, which is not the same as being in the house — but it is close enough to warrant an inspection of the structure.
- From a tree stump or landscape timber in the yard. Common, and much less alarming. The colony is in the wood in the ground.
What to do in the first hour
- Collect specimens. A few insects, or a pinch of the shed wings, in a sealed bag or a jar. This makes identification certain rather than probable.
- Photograph the location. Wide shot for context, close shot for detail. Where they came out matters as much as what they are.
- Do not spray them. Killing the swarmers changes nothing about the colony — the alates that emerged indoors were leaving anyway and mostly die regardless. Spraying only destroys your evidence and can complicate a professional inspection.
- Do not disturb any mud tubes. If you find shelter tubes on a wall or pier, leave them intact for the inspector. Their condition and contents are informative.
- Book an inspection. Within days is appropriate. Same-afternoon panic is not.
Why Dallas is favourable ground
Subterranean termites need soil contact and sustained moisture, and North Texas supplies both alongside a long warm season. The Blackland Prairie clay under most of the city has a high shrink-swell capacity: it contracts away from foundations during dry spells and expands again when it rains, working cracks, expansion joints and penetrations open and closed year after year. Ordinary landscaping choices then add the moisture. Irrigation spraying a foundation wall, mulch banked above the slab line, a flowerbed burying the weep holes, a dripping outside tap, or firewood stacked against the house all put damp conditions exactly where the colony wants them, next to the wood it is looking for.
What actually reduces the risk
- Keep soil and mulch below the slab line, and maintain a visible, dry gap along the foundation.
- Point sprinkler heads away from the building and fix drips and leaks promptly.
- Extend downspouts so roof water discharges well away from the foundation.
- Keep firewood, lumber and stored timber off the ground and away from the structure.
- Remove old stumps, buried form boards and landscape timbers in contact with soil.
- Keep crawlspace vents clear, and keep the crawlspace dry.
- Have the structure inspected annually. In this region that is the standard recommendation, not an upsell.
A swarm outdoors is not the same as a swarm indoors
Alates emerging from a stump, a woodpile or a fence post in the yard tell you there is a colony in the soil in your neighbourhood — which, in Dallas, there almost certainly is regardless. Alates emerging inside the structure are a different signal entirely. Note which one you actually saw before deciding how worried to be.

No. The alates that emerge are a tiny fraction of a colony and are leaving anyway; the great most die whether or not anyone intervenes. The workers doing the actual damage never leave the wood and the soil. Killing swarmers removes the evidence and changes nothing about the colony.
They swarmed once and never came back. Do I still need an inspection?
